15 days to better skin : its in the details …

About now, you’re seeing positive changes in your skin and leaps forward in caring for it. The best way to set off your new glowing skin is to take care of the smaller details as well. One of the smaller details that happens to complement healthy skin are lips.

Day 11 : January 11

Scrub, soften and protect your lips.

Soft kissable lips and smooth clear skin pack a one-two punch in the healthy department.

Start by exfoliating the lips with a gentle lip scrub or soft toothbrush. If you don’t have a lip scrub, you can mix together some coconut oil with brown sugar. Using a gentle circular motion across the lips removes dry skin and flakes revealing smoother skin instantly. Be sure to exfoliate over the lip line as well.

Once your lips are freshly scrubbed, smooth and replenish the area with your favourite natural lip balm. Be liberal with it … and be frequent. And same thing : don’t just apply to the lip area, go over the lip line a bit to nourish and hydrate any finer lines around the mouth.

If you own a lip cream, you can apply this as well for a very intensive lip treatment.

No, kiss away …

TIP : Scrubbing your lips is way different than scrubbing your skin, face, or feet. A gentle touch is all you need. Scrub too hard and your lips may get chapped all over again.

HOMEWORK : Make a habit of having a natural lip balm nearby or in your pocket at all times. Especially in the winter months!

Experts say that a the best way to reach a goal is to set small goals and reward yourself each time you reach that goal. Well, I’ve given you a 15-day guide to follow and you’re at 10 day. And I know you are good for five more, so today, I want you to set your reward for the end of this 15 days … and enjoy it.

Day 10 : January 10

Book a facial.

Whether you book just a facial or a full day at the spa, that’s up to you … but just make sure it includes a bit of pampering for your new skin. It could be a simple facial with extractions or a full on treatment complete with a peel but do your research and only book in for what you’re truly comfortable with.  This includes budget and time wise too.

Again, the key here is that it’s a reward. So treat it like one. The only stipulation is you make your appointment for 6 days from now – AFTER you complete your 15 day guide.

Go ahead – make that call!

TIP : If you don’t go for a facial regularly, ask friends who do for recommendations. Right down to the package they buy and the skin specialist they see.  You can’t go wrong with great recommendations.

We’re just at the very beginning of the rest of your future, so let’s begin to make the right changes that will make sure your future is flawless …

Day 9 : January 9

Assemble your anti-aging team of product superheroes.

By now, you’re in the habit of cleansing and moisturizing everyday and night, plus you know to exfoliate and mask once, if not twice, weekly. These are the key steps to ensuring healthy skin for the rest of 2017. But now, let’s make a habit of treating and preparing your skin for 2017 and beyond … to like 2027 … or 2037.

Remember your notes from Day 1.  Let’s reflect back to them. Do you see more fine lines than you care to see? Some dark spots perhaps? Or are you okay … and want to stay okay for as long as possible? Whatever you glean and conclude from your notes, keep those points at the forefront of your mind as we plan your next shopping trip.

Over the next few paychecks, I want you to make both a budget and product plan to pick-up at least 2, if not all 3, of the following items :

  • Retinol
  • Serum
  • Eye and/or lip cream

A retinol based product can assist you with fading dark spots and stimulating the growth of new skin cells; this is key because as you age, your skin doesn’t produce new cells as efficiently to help repair and keep away the signs of aging. There are plenty of retinol based products on the market, or if you have severe skin issues, you can speak with a dermatologist about something on prescription-strength level.

Serums are available to deliver powerful ingredients directly into the skin – you can target specific skin issues directly such as wrinkles, acne, or improving skintone and texture. A serum is more lightweight than your moisturizer, so you apply it after your cleanse, let it sit, and then you moisturizer.

An eye and/or lip cream treats the most delicate skin on your face. The area around your eyes and lips is more fragile, prone to dryness, and … quickest to show signs of aging. Eye and lip creams are both soothing to the skin and create a smoothing effect for the fine lines that appear around these areas.

Picking up these three products and adding them to your routine creates a powerhouse of protection against the future.

15 days to better skin : repetition is good …

Well, we completed one whole week and are now in the back half of our 15 days. There is still plenty to share as we turnaround your skin, and we hope you have enjoyed following along.

Day 8 : January 8

Cleanse, exfoliate and rejuvenate.

Remember the deep cleanse and exfoliate from Day 1? Well, you should be cleansing every night, but today you’re going to exfoliate again. You should be about due for one anyway. In addition to exfoliating, take an extra 30 minutes to enjoy the benefits of a face mask.

Exfoliating once or twice weekly is more than enough and can help to remove dead skin cells and improve circulation, which prevents dull skin and imparts a natural glow. A mask assists in repairing and hydrating the skin; or if you choose the right mask with the right ingredients, it can aid in clarifying pores, improving collagen production or firming the skin. There are plenty to choose from (or make in your kitchen at home!) and you can switch it up each week!

I repeat, this entire routine should be something you do weekly, or if possible – twice weekly. Your skin will thank you for it.

Take it easy tonight!

TIP : For face masks, you can never have too many to choose from. You can research some DIY masks from the good ole interweb; or you can pick up a selection of sheet masks (which are super fun) from a local beauty store.

15 days to better skin : lighten up …

On Instagram, I often selfie about going makeup free for a few days when you can to let your skin just be itself. I suggest it to my client’s as well, especially when they are trying to repair and correct any skin issues. I simply cleanse, moisturize and protect for a few days … nothing else.

Of course, it’s a task that is easier said than done, especially if you love makeup. I LOVE MAKEUP … I do.  But … I also love my skin. Here’s a way you can toe the line of being almost makeup free for one or two days, giving your skin a much deserved rest.

Day 7 : January 7

Lighten up.

As in lighten up your application or lighten up on the products or lighten up on the formulations. You don’t have to go full face EVERY day. Sometimes a quick 3-minute face looks just as polished and clean as the 30-minute face that’s complete with contour and highlight.

I suggest using as minimal products as possible, foregoing some of the extra stuff like eyeshadows, all sorts of powders (baking to contouring), and setting sprays.

Here are some looks that you can try to go makeup lite for at least 2-3 days a week without missing a step :

  • Use a tinted moisturizer instead of a medium or full coverage foundation to base your face. Plenty of brands have a range of skintones and shades available for tinted moisturizers (instead of just light, medium, dark) which means you can still enjoy a little bit of coverage that matches and enhances your skin. Apply all over.  Brush your brow hairs up and out, and fill in lightly if needed. Apply a hint of mascara and your favourite bold lip colour.
  • Conceal as needed with a creamy concealer.  Usually just around the nose and under the eyes will suffice, plus any imperfections. If you’re poison is normally eyeshadow and definition, dial it back a bit. Skip the eyeshadow, buy take a nice creamy kohl pencil and line your eyes close the lashes.  Smudge the colour a bit for a soft smoke that rims the eyes. Add mascara, brush up the brows, and throw on a gloss or lip stain.
  • Have an organic makeup bag strictly for your lighter days. I favour RMS beauty and W3LL people, which both have base colours for the skin, and a series of cream colours for the face.  Spot cover only with your organic base – much like the concealing step in the tip above. Blend into the skin. Using a multi-use cream colour in a flattering neutral shade (thing dusty pinks , peaches, etc) apply a dab to the lips and a swoosh on the cheeks for a fresh-flushed face. You can repeat the same brow and mascara step as above.

Not only will lightening your makeup application give you better skin, but it will give you more time – especially on the weekend – to just get on with it. We only get two days a week to rejuvenate from the daily grind so make the most of it!

TIP : The creamier the concealer the less you’ll need to apply. If you have a stiffer concealer, take a bit and warm it up on the back of your hand a bit before applying. Or, mix a bit with your moisturizer so that it glides better over the skin.

HOMEWORK : Start an organic makeup bag. You don’t need much – especially since organic products can cost a pretty penny.  Spend what you can for a good organic base, and then you can scrimp a bit on colour products and build from there. In the long run, you’ll be able to do a full face with a selection of great organic products while still treating your skin well. This is a great option for those who need to be Beyoncé 24/7!

15 days to better skin : grab some nuts …

We’re just motoring through our 15 days here, aren’t we? As you can probably tell, beautifying the complexion incorporates so much more than just a great cleanser and face oil; and that’s why today, we’re focusing on how to fuel your body for a healthy glow.

Day 6 : January 6

There are plenty of dietary changes that can help alleviate and regulate any skin issues that might arise. For example, you may hear a lot about cutting out dairy or soy, or both dairy and soy all together. And of course there is also tonnes of info out there about eating more veggies, or consuming nothing about superfoods. Since you’re probably already watching what you eat to get bikini body ready in 6 months, I’m going to avoid any further nagging and chat at you about two snacks you can add to your diet without disrupting your current weight-loss plans.

WALNUTS AND ALMONDS

These two nuts are right up there with the “easiest snacks ever” that you can bag up and stick in your purse for on the go noshing. No prep. No mess. Eat straight from your tiny tupperware container.

Almonds, which are high in Zinc can help aid in the healing of wounds, skin rashes and exzema. Walnuts can also help prevent or calm down breakouts, but because of their Omega-3 fatty acid content they can keep you looking younger a little bit longer.

Incorporating both buts into your routine takes a simple trip to a bulk food store, and some prep in advance.

Crunch on.

TIP : If almonds or walnuts on their own don’t seem appealing to you, try adding them to a tasty salad for some added texture. If you’re not dieting, crush some walnuts on top of a delicious brownie, bowl of ice cream, or piece of chocolate cake!

HOMEWORK : Do your research on supplements for both Zinc and Omega-3 fatty acids. If you can’t adopt a routine of eating almonds or walnuts, and aren’t sure if your current diet incorporates enough of either nutrient, a supplement can help to top you up! Do speak with your GP first if you have any concerns about additional supplements.
